Training The need for accredited tradesmen for the design, fabrication and installation of plastics pipeline systems is growing in Australia and PIPA is involved in ensuring that the supply of tradesmen meets the demand. The Plastics, Rubber and Cablemaking Training Package PMB01 was released in September 2001 and contains Competency Standards PMBWELD301A through PMBWELD311A within the package specifically refering to plastics pipeline systems design, welding and installation. This enables competent workers to gain Nationally accredited qualifications which incorporate plastics pipe design, welding and installation. Background and other information from this document relevant to PIPA polyolefin members, has been put together in a paper about accredited qualifications. Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) interested in presenting courses meeting the Competency Standards PMBWELD301A through PMBWELD311A need to develop curriculums for the courses and maintain a register of accredited tradesmen. PIPA recommends that for your training needs you should contact the following organisations. Bob LeHunt and Assosiates PIPA recommends for all your training needs on Installation of PVC pressure Pipelines and Design of PVC Pressure Pipelines, use the Flexitec course prepared and presented by Bob LeHunt and Associates and his approved training providers. The course is approved by the Australian National Training Authority and meets the competency standards set out in PMB 01 Qualification Framework for the plastics, rubber and cablemaking industry. The Flexitec course is delivered nationally either directly by LeHunt and Associates or in conjunction with PARTEC (QLD, NT, NSW), Holmesglen TAFE (VIC) and Regency TAFE (SA). For more information contact Bob LeHunt in Australia: Fusion Hire Services Pty Ltd FHS has set up online training in electrofusion welding, based on PMBWELD302B – Electrofusion weld polyethylene pipelines. The program can be accessed through the FHS web site, www.fhs.com.au Polymer Fusion Technology A Registered Training Organisation operating from Perth in Western Australia, Polymer Fusion Technology presents courses all over Australia and in South East Asia. They specialize in teaching fabrication and installation techniques in polyolefin products using wide range of equipment and techniques. Courses provided: PMBWELD301B – Butt weld polyethylene plastic pipelines For more information contact Maxine Minchin: North Coast Institute of TAFE, Wollongbar Campus Peter Smith provides training and consultancy on butt fusion of polyethylene pipes, extrusion welding, electrofusion and hot air welding. For more information contact Peter Smith, Welding Technologist Waterways of Singleton The qualified trainers used by Waterways of Singleton have been trained by AGRU in Austria. They specialize in butt welding. electrofusion welding, hot air welding, extrusion welding, hot wedge double seam welding and heating element socket welding of polyolefin products. Waterways is not a registered RTO, but they present courses acceptable to PIPA. For more information contact Kim Mahoney in Australia: XLT Industrial Training Pty Ltd XLT Industrial Training is a registered training organisation (RTO) with the Federal Department of Education, Science and Technology (Australian national Training Authority). XLT conducts training courses in butt fusion and electrofusion of plastics pipeline systems. For further information please visit the
Development of New Australian Standard Qualification and Certification of Personnel for Plastics Welding Standards Australia has approved the preparation of a standard to set out requirements for the qualification and certification of personnel involved in the welding of plastics.
PIPA has five positions on PL-006-02:
PIPA revised the Draft Standard prepared by WD-003-07 and the draft was accepted as a working document at the first meeting of PL-006-02 on 26 April, 2006. PL-006-02 identified a need for the Plastics welder accreditation standard and prepared a justification for the Standard that was submitted to PL-006 main committee for approval. PL-006 approved the development of the standard at a meeting on 3 May, 2006 and gave the task to PL-006-02 to complete. PIPA committee responsible for the development of the Standard is composed of the following members:
WELDING FOR BEGINNERS March 2003 PIPA has been developing strategy for the role it should play training people working in the pipeline systems industry. The area that requires immediate attention is fabrication and installation. The PIPA Board has issued a direction to develop a strategy for welding of polyethylene pipes. To gain first hand knowledge of the type of welding courses presented to the industry Dimi Pesudovs attended and participated in a butt welding training offered by Agru Australia Pty Ltd and conducted by Damian Hamilton at Waterways of Singleton.
