Environmental Product Declarations
EPDs provide independently verified environmental information in a standardised format. EPDs are based on Life cycle assessment (LCA) that requires a compilation of the inputs, outputs and resulting environmental impacts of a product system throughout its life cycle.
Two PIPA members, Iplex and Vinidex, have acted as first movers in the plastic pipe industry by developing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) through the Australasian EPD Programme. The EPDs have been produced by Edge Environment and have undergone thorough third party critical review by Catalyst. These EPDs cover pressure and non-pressure PVC pipes and also polypropylene (PP) pipes. EPDs for PE pipe products have also been completed.
The results of Iplex and Vinidex assessments show that the world leading technologies employed in the Australian plastics pipe industry provide significant environmental benefit in terms of reduction of raw material required.
- Lower density foam core PVC non-pressure pipe utilises internal scrap, is lighter weight and can reduce embodied carbon per pipe length by up to 25%.
- Oriented PVC (PVC-O) material allows for exceptionally tough, impact resistant and ductile pipe with less material and reduce embodied carbon per pipe length by up to 50%.
- Modified PVC (PVC-M) material allows for the optimum combination of strength and ductility with a thinner wall, less material and reduced embodied carbon per length of pipe by up to 15%.
